And friends are friends forever

Our Daily Bread
I am so very fortunate to have the bestest best friend in the world.  When we talk, we are sensitive to what "mode" we are to be in at that moment.  Should I be in "best friend" mode where I say the startling truth no matter how much it might hurt (said in love of course) or "best friend" mode where I need to let him vent and add at the end "That beee-yotch!"  ha!  We have been there for each other in thick and thin.

The devotional gave me a new insight on a Christian friendship.  While I am fortunate to have many Christian friends, I never thought of this:
"A true friend is a gift from God and one who points us back to Him." - Our Daily Bread

The "pointing back to Him" part can be awkward at times.  No one wants to hear that they might need to take a step back and double check with God about something.  Saying it in Christian friendship and love is key here.  For the record, I suck at this approach, especially if the person is as stiff-necked as me.  I have a tendency to go overboard in my delivery.  I am praying about this....

Lord, thank you for friends.  They truly are a gift from God.

Teaching Tuesday
The lesson this week was a little odd in my opinion, but it was very interesting.  The first part of it was about Micah, a prophet contemporary of Isaiah.  Isaiah focused his energies on the southern kingdom.  Micah focused his energy on the northern kingdom.  It was interesting to read about the different perspectives of the city dweller, Isaiah, and the rural prophet, Micah.

The lesson then went back to Deuteronomy.  I finally figured out the reason why.  King Josiah was during the time of Isaiah and Micah.  Apparently, the book of Deuteronomy was rediscovered during his reign.  He read it and was moved to follow it to the letter.  He did all the right things when it came to worshiping YAWH according to the D source.  Very cool!

The book mentions this prayer that I copied to include in my prayers during the week.  It is from the Yom Kippur liturgy:

Our God and the God of our fathers, may our prayers come before You, and do not disregard our supplication. For we are not so bold and stiff-necked to say before you, oh God and God of our fathers, that we are saints and have not sinned; rather we and our fathers have sinned. We have sinned with guilt, we have betrayed you, we have stolen, we have spoken wrongly, we have sinned willfully, and have caused others to sin, we have sinned on purpose, we have forced others to give us things, and we have lied. We have given bad advice, we have falsified, we have made fun of others, we have rebelled, we have cursed others, we have strayed from the proper path, have turned others away, we have committed crimes, we have been wicked, we have been stiff-necked. We have been terrible, we have been corrupt, we have been abominable, we have turned astray and have made others turn astray. We have turned away from your commandments and your good laws, but it wasn’t worth it! And you are righteous about all that happens to us, for you do right, and we have sinned.  -- Holy City Prayer Society

 May this be our prayer today!

7-Eleven

Our Daily Bread
One of the jokes in the United States is how "open" a 7-Eleven store is -- 24/7, 365 days per year.  It is open for its customers all the time!  There have been times when they are out of gas or out of my favorite snack or the credit card machine is offline due to a technical glitch.  Open does not always mean available!

God has an even better offer.  Not only is he open 24/7, 365 days per year.  He is available every millisecond of each day.  He is there to hear our prayers.  He is there to comfort us.  He is there to lead us via the Holy Spirit.  The only technical glitches that can occur are when we take ourselves offline!  Yikes!

Thank you, Lord, for being available to us all the time.  Please help us be available to you as well.

Movie Monday
I saw the movie GI Joe: Retaliation on Friday night.  It was what I expected -- a comic book on the screen with lots of fights and blowing stuff up.  There are times when I really want to see that kind of stuff!  This movie did it well.  Before this review sounds like I am recommending the movie, please note that there wasn't much actual acting involved!  ha!  I enjoyed the movie for what it was.  If you see it, I hope you do too.

I give this movie two bear paws.  I saw it in regular format.  It is also available in 3D and 3D Imax.

Happy Easter! He is Risen! He is Risen indeed!

Happy Easter!
Alleluia, He is Risen!

Our Daily Bread
TV commercials range from the ridiculous to the sublime in my opinion.  One that seemed to gross me out was the antacid medicine commercial that had a talking stomach as its spokesperson.  We usually call it heartburn instead of stomach burn.  I am not sure why.

The men walking on the road to Emmaus experienced a burning in their hearts that no medicine could relieve!  They remembered later that the only other time their hearts burned within them like that was when Jesus was speaking to them before his death.  How could they not have recognized him?

We can be like this today.  God can speak.  We keep waling like everything is normal even when we feel the burning of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.  Can we listen today?  Listen and obey?

Lord, your words burn in our hearts.  Please help us worship and obey.

Psalm Sunday
Let's look at Psalm 88 this week.  Talk about a Debbie Downer psalm!  The thing I like about the psalms so much is the total honesty and the ability to express this honesty even when it may not be comfortable for the folks around us.  Would you say the words below out loud when other folks could hear them?  Would you say these words in prayer to God?  We should feel comfortable to express these things, then turn them over to God.  This is an important lesson that God reminded me about this week, also known as Duane's Holy Week of whining...  OH boy.   Read the psalm out loud.  Pray the psalm to God.

Psalm 88

A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.

1 Lord, you are the God who saves me;
    day and night I cry out to you.
2 May my prayer come before you;
    turn your ear to my cry.
3 I am overwhelmed with troubles
    and my life draws near to death.
4 I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am like one without strength.
5 I am set apart with the dead,
    like the slain who lie in the grave,
whom you remember no more,
    who are cut off from your care.
6 You have put me in the lowest pit,
    in the darkest depths.
7 Your wrath lies heavily on me;
    you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.
8 You have taken from me my closest friends
    and have made me repulsive to them.
I am confined and cannot escape;
9     my eyes are dim with grief.
I call to you, Lord, every day;
    I spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you show your wonders to the dead?
    Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
11 Is your love declared in the grave,
    your faithfulness in Destruction?
12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness,
    or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?
13 But I cry to you for help, Lord;
    in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 Why, Lord, do you reject me
    and hide your face from me?
15 From my youth I have suffered and been close to death;
    I have borne your terrors and am in despair.
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
    your terrors have destroyed me.
17 All day long they surround me like a flood;
    they have completely engulfed me.
18 You have taken from me friend and neighbor—
    darkness is my closest friend.

Holy Week - Day 7

Our Daily Bread
Pay it Forward was a movie released a few years ago where a boy started a movement to pass along good deeds to folks.  He did a good deed.  He asked the person to pay it forward and do a good deed to someone else and so one.  It caused a short-lived trend for folks to do this in their daily lives!

Jesus gave us the ultimate "pay if forward" gift.  He died on the cross for our sins.  He didn't have to come to earth in the form of a human.  He didn't have to suffer and die.  He didn't have to give himself for us.  He did so out of love and obedience.  He knew what the experience would be like and did it anyway.  He did that for you and for me.

Lord, please help us always remember the sacrifice you made, especially when our small sacrifices seem so difficult for us.

Simply Saturday
Such a whiner during Holy Week
I didn't make it to rehearsal Monday night.  I whined about being tired, went home and went to bed.

I fulfilled my requirements Tuesday night, a voice lesson and my EFM class.  I sort of whined about the class afterwards.

I planned to attend the Tennebrae service on Wednesday, however I complained about being tired, went home and went to bed.

I attended the Maundy Thursday service at church the other night.  The choir had to be at church about 6:10 or so.  We rehearsed after the service, so I didn't home until about 10:00.  Whew...  Whining again.

I got to see a movie after work Friday, then went to the Good Friday service.  I took a break from my whining as I cried bitter tears during the service.  I could hardly look at the representation of Christ that hung over the altar.  His eyes seemed to say "I have given you so much.  Why the whining?"

I get to play tennis today, do some stuff around the house, then attend the Great Vigil service tonight.  I am practicing about NOT whining about the Great Vigil service being too long or about being at church for about five hours on Easter Sunday.

Giving your life over to Christ means several things to me.  First, God told me that my feelings are important. It is OK to whine.  I need to turn those things over to God.  If I had already done that, regardless of the whining topic of the moment, I wouldn't have anything to whine about, would I?  Second, taking my eyes off myself and looking around at others is so much more important considering that others need me.  God put me right here, right now, for many reasons.  I can rejoice in that!  Lastly, my whining appears to be about my wants, not my needs.  God always provides.  Always.  Regardless of the need, God always provides.  I can testify to that.

This Holy Week has been holy indeed.  Tears shed.  God's presence felt.  Growth occurred.  While I can't guarantee the whining will stop, I am more conscious of it now.  I will trust in the Lord.  I will wait patiently for Him.

I pray the weight of my sins doth not crush me back to dust from where I came. I pray that God create in me a new, clean heart and place a right spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of my salvation. Praise the Almighty God from whom all blessings flow.

Holy Week - Day 6

Our Daily Bread
A popular and unpopular questions around Good Friday is: Who killed Jesus?  Was it the Jews?  Was it the Romans?  Was it God?  Who exactly?  Who should pay or be blamed for this horrible deed?

I have a different viewpoint, as you might guess.  Yes, Jesus was tortured.  Yes, Jesus was nailed to a cross.  Yes, they mocked him like all the other prophets before him who were killed in Jerusalem.  This man was different.  The Bible says in several accounts that "Jesus gave up his spirit".  Jesus had control of his life and his death.  In my humble opinion, no one killed Jesus.  Jesus died for us. He died for us in his time on his own terms.  He could have come down off that cross and saved himself.  He may have lasted for days if left on the cross to die like most others did.

When  you think of Jesus this weekend, remember that this silly old bear offers a different perspective: Jesus died for us.  No one on this earth has the power to kill the Son of God!

Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for us on the Cross.  Your death is our victory, though at a tremendous cost!

Foodie Friday
Not trying to take any business away from the Girl Scouts, but here is a recipe for homemake Samoas.  Mmmmmm!

Homemade Girl Scout Cookies: Samoas Bars

Samoas Bars, stacked

Homemade Samoas Bars
Cookie Base:
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 large egg
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt

First, make the crust.
Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan, or line with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, cream together sugar and butter, until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla extract. Working at a low speed, gradually beat in flour and salt until mixture is crumbly, like wet sand. The dough does not need to come together. Pour crumbly dough into prepapred pan and press into an even layer.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, until base is set and edges are lightly browned. Cool completely on a wire rack before topping.

Topping
3 cups shredded coconut (sweetened or unsweetened)
12-oz good-quality chewy caramels
1/4 tsp salt
3 tbsp milk
10 oz. dark or semisweet chocolate (chocolate chips are ok)

Preheat oven to 300. Spread coconut evenly on a parchment-lined baking sheet (preferably one with sides) and toast 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes, until coconut is golden. Cool on baking sheet, stirring occasionally. Set aside.

Unwrap the caramels and place in a large microwave-safe bowl with milk and salt. Cook on high for 3-4 minutes, stopping to stir a few times to help the caramel melt. When smooth, fold in toasted coconut with a spatula.
Put dollops of the topping all over the shortbread base. Using the spatula, spread topping into an even layer. Let topping set until cooled.
When cooled, cut into 30 bars with a large knife or a pizza cutter (it’s easy to get it through the topping).
Once bars are cut, melt chocolate in a small bowl. Heat on high in the microwave in 45 second intervals, stirring thoroughly to prevent scorching. Dip the base of each bar into the chocolate and place on a clean piece of parchment or wax paper. Transfer all remaining chocolate (or melt a bit of additional chocolate, if necessary) into a piping bag or a ziploc bag with the corner snipped off and drizzle bars with chocolate to finish.
Let chocolate set completely before storing in an airtight container.

Makes 30 bar cookies.

Note: You can simply drizzle chocolate on top of the bars before slicing them up if you’re looking for yet an easier way to finish these off. You won’t need quite as much chocolate as noted above, and you won’t quite get the Samoas look, but the results will still be tasty.

Holy Week - Day 5

Our Daily Bread
Have you ever channel surfed and ran across something that you wish you never saw?  For me, it used to be a surgery channel that had all kinds of gross stuff on the screen!  There were also shows that made people eat gross stuff to win money.  Ewww!

Think of the grossest (Don't think that is a word, but it sounded good) thing you ever saw or felt or heard.  Now multiply that by the highest number  you can think of, like a ten bazillion.  IMHO, that is how God feels about sin.  Can you imagine having that grossest feeling ever as many times as he has it every day with all of our sinning?  Sin is not just a "bad thing".  Our sins separate us from God.  Separation is bad!

Jesus gave himself to mend the sinful rift between God and man.  We can accept that gift or not.  Accepting is good.  ;-)

Lord, thank you for the sacrifice of your only Son.  Please help us accept that gift and try to sin no more!

Holy Week - Day 4

Our Daily Bread
I changed the famous movie quote a little to go along with the devotional "The truth? We have to hold on to the truth!".  Yes, the truth abounds this Holy Week as we are reminded of the truth of our sin and God's mercy each day.  Personally, I know Satan has been at working overtime this week.  How about you?  Have you had more distractions than normal?  Have you felt like a heavier burden than normal has been on your shoulders?

Hold on to the truth, my friends!  You CAN handle the truth.  The truth will set you free!

Lord, thank you for sharing the truth with us.  Please help us hold on to your truth!

Wellness Wednesday
Healthy snacks
Please forgive me if I write about eating habits the next few weeks.  I sooooooo need a reminder that I will never accomplish my weight loss and fitness goals until I get my eating habits under consistent control.  I have been lingering in the land of "one good day and six bad days" instead of 6 to 1 or 5 to 2.  Whew...  Here are some tips about snacking.  If you need to snack, and not everyone needs to, consider following these recommendations from an AOL Healthy Living article.

  1. Do you really need to snack?  Not everyone needs the extra calories from snacking.  Some folks require regular snacks to maintain their metabolic rate or maintain their blood sugar levels.
  2. Confusing the terms "snack" and "treat".  I eat way too many treats.  The guideline I have read is limit the snack to 100 calories or less and it must have some nutritional value.  100 calories worth of M&Ms is not a good thing!  Snacks should also help you feel full if you are eating to stave off hunger and binging.  Try to eat something with protein if you must have a snack.  It will help you feel fuller, longer.
  3. Having "healthy" carbs alone.  Most folks consider a apple or orange by itself as a healthy snack.  You should include some kind of protein with a carby snack.  The protein helps the food gently elevate your blood sugar level instead of a sudden spike.
  4. Skipping fruits and veggies.  There are many reasons that nutritionists recommend a combo snack of protein and carbs -- it is the most healthy for you if you have to snack!  Try not to eat a protein only snack.
  5. Being mindless.  I like the term "multi-tasking snacking".  Find what you are good at and stick with it!  That's what I say!  Seriously, it is easy to mindlessly eat a whole bag of chips or box of Girl Scout cookies while watching TV or surfing the Internet on your iPad.  I have a tendency to stress eat or mindlessly eat.  Stop it, duanebear!
  6. "health halo grazing".  Even if you eat the right stuff in the right combinations (carb and protein), it is too easy to let the portion size and calorie count grow to the size of a meal.  Don't do that, duanebear!  ha!
The bottom line: If you must snack, eat the right foods in the right portions!
***************************
Let go, my friends!  God will be there to catch you and hold you in his loving arms!
