Users love

Our Daily Bread
We have this recurring theme at work called "Users love" where the IT folks strive to give our users applications and hardware they love because they help them do their jobs better.  When I first learned about this theme, I said "But love is fickle!  How are we measuring this?"  Still waiting on an answer for that question!

Christians can be fickle as well.  It is only natural for human beings to be that way.  It is part of our nature.  As Christians, we strive to subdue our human nature through the grace and power of God!  The Holy Spirit strengthens us to live consistently Godly lives.

Consistency is my weakness.  I am pretty good under fire or under duress.  I totally believe in the power of God to deliver me or my friends and family.  It is the day to day discipline that I need help with!

Lord, thank you for loving us so we can be loving followers and lead others to you!

Foodie Friday
A friend posted this recipe on Facebook recently.  I did not see a web site reference for it.  It sounds yummy!

Cheesecake Crescent Rolls

2 cans of Pillsbury Crescent rolls
2 (8oz each) package cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup butter, melted
cinnamon
sugar

Unroll and spread 1 of the cans of crescent rolls on the bottom of a 9 x 13 baking dish (or 8 x 8 if you want to cut the recipe in half). Combine softened cream cheese, 1 cup sugar, and vanilla. Spread over crescent roll layer. Unroll and layer remaining crescent rolls over cream cheese layer. Melt your butter and spread over top of crescent rolls. Sprinkle generously with cinnamon and sugar.

Bake for 20-30 minutes in 350 degree oven until bubbly and slightly browned. Drizzle with a little honey if you like. Let cool a bit, slice and eat.

Full of himself

Our Daily Bread
My grandparents didn't like people that were too self-confident or self-absorbed.  I don't know too many people that do!  They would say "He is so full of himself!".  They also said he was full of something else at times as well!  ha!

It is so easy to read our own bylines, meaning letting the nice things that people say about us go to our heads.  We swell up with pride.  Pride comes before the fall.  We don't think we need God any longer.  We can handle it all by ourselves.  NOT!  Maintaining a humble heart and walking humbly with our Lord can be a struggle for some folks that are good looking or talented or skilled or rich.  They sometimes get full of themselves instead of full of God's love and grace!

Lord, please help us fill our minds and hearts with your love and grace to truly be your humble servants!

Technology Thursday
Windows 8
Have you seen the current version of Microsoft Windows yet?  It is Windows 8.  Some folks call it the Windows Vista or Windows ME of the 2010s and others call it brilliant.  It is primarily designed for touch interface devices such as tablets, smart phones and touch screen PCs (both of them...).  The new interface works pretty well for these devices, though it still takes some getting used to.  For the rest of us who still use a PC and a mouse, the interface is a nightmare.  You can't find stuff at all.  The familiar Start button is gone.  Here is some advice if you have to purchase a Windows 8 PC or laptop.

First, know that Microsoft is releasing Windows 8.1, a free upgrade, sometime this Fall.  The Start button will return.  The interface will be more familiar for those that prefer the Windows 7 style workspace.  Whew...  The new OS is supposed to load and shut down much faster.  It has a smaller memory footprint (uses less computer memory).  It is faster than Windows 7.

Once you get past the interface issues, there are still some other problems.  Like Windows 7, there is a lot of hardware and software that is left in the dust, meaning that they are supported on Windows 8.  Be sure to run the Windows 8 Upgrade Analyzer before upgrading so you understand what may; not work after you upgrade.  About half the hardware and software on my six year old home built desktop isn't supported.  ;-(

Check it out.  You may not have a choice of what you get when you buy a new computer.  Make the most of it.

Storm watch

Our Daily Bread
I grew up in a family of farmers.  They were constantly monitoring the weather so they could plan their outdoor work.  Since I am a computer guy, I joked that I had to do what I had to do in good weather or bad!  Just give me some electricity and an Internet connection!  ha!

Many of us "weather watch" as part of our Christian lives.  We only seem to call on Jesus to "wake him up" as it stated in the devotional.  The disciples woke Jesus when the storm arose on the seas to save them from the storm.  Too often we only wake Jesus to save us.  We rarely wake him to thank him or praise him!  Praise God that he is always with us!

Lord, thank you for always being with us in good weather and bad!

Wellness Wednesday
Summer coffee drinks
As a person that goes to Starbucks a few times per week, I don't drink the iced coffee drinks.  I usually get my cafe mocha with skim milk and no whipped cream (boring!).  ha!  That reduces the number of calories of my morning treat to about 280 for a venti.  Not too bad.  There are other iced coffee drinks there check in at 500 - 700 calories!  Yikes!  Some have more sugar than two or three candy bars combined!

Read this article to get some healthier options for your iced coffee cravings this summer.  Enjoy!

Moderation

Our Daily Bread
I have never been that good at moderation.  I usually go full guns at something until I get tired of it and then move on.  I also have a tendency to get too busy and not be the person I should be because I get too tired or frustrated.  Moderation.

The devotional talks about moderation as well.  Finding moderation in our lives so that we don't let anything come between us and God.  It is easy to play tennis too much, or sing too much, or exercise too much or work too much or whatever you like to do best.  None of these things are necessarily bad in themselves.  Whenever anything comes between us and doing what we need to do for God, then it is a major problem!

Does anything come to mind for you?

Lord, thank you for giving us abilities and guidance on how to use them for you.  Please let us do things in moderation so we can keep nothing between us!

Teaching Tuesday
Teachable
I haven't started my first summer book yet, but I have something today.  An important lesson I have learned and am still learning is to be teachable.  Did you go to school with someone that just didn't want to be taught anything by anyone?  He or she thought they knew it all?  After studying God's Word for the better part of a lifetime, Christians can be like that.  We think we know all we need to know about the Bible and our God.  Silly humans!

Please consider praying before each time you read the Bible "Lord, please open my eyes and heart to your Word".  Please consider praying during your daily prayers "Lord, please teach me your ways.  I am listening."  Being teachable is the first step.,

Sacrifice

Our Daily Bread
I thought a lot about our veterans today.  So many gave their lives.  Even more came home wounded beyond repair, either physically or mentally.  Such a sacrifice so we all can exercise our freedoms!  Thank you so much!

Christ also sacrificed himself so we could be free from sin.  We can release the bonds of sin that would lead to our destruction, relieve us of our spiritual freedom to commune with God.  What a sacrifice!  Thank you so much!

Christ gave all for us, like many of our veterans.  Thank you all!

Movie Monday
I saw two movies this weekend with my best friend.  I saw Star Trek Into Darkness (again), but this time it was in 3D IMAX.  I also saw Fast 6 (Fast and Furious 6).

Star Trek
I enjoyed this even more in 3D IMAX!  I highly recommend.  Go during a matinee to reduce the outrageous cost of 3D IMAX!

Fast 6
I gave up on the Fast and Furious series after number 3, but I find myself viewing every one at the theater.  Oh well.  I was very impressed with Fast 5.  Very good.  I thought Fast 6 was very good as well.  Lots of action and fast cars.  Lots of cool stunts.  The whole idea of family was very cool.  Let me know what you think of the end after you see it.  I don't want to give any spoilers.

I owe you

Our Daily Bread
There was a pop song (and also a country version) called I owe you.  It was a love song saying how the man owed so many loving moments to the object of his love.  It was the object of his love that caused all of these things to happen.

I think I could sing a praise song like that to God!  "I owe you for the peace and joy and happiness I live in.  I owe you for the strength in difficult times.  I owe you for a life that is closer to heaven on earth than I could have imagined."  Unlike a debtor that is under contract to pay back a debt, we get to dedicate our lives to God our of gratitude and praise.  We have the honor and privilege of serving the God who created our universe (and maybe many more!).  I owe you, my God!

Lord, thank you for the privilege of serving you.  Please help us do a better job at it!

Psalm Sunday
Let's look at Psalm 96 today.  My question to you is: What is a new song to the Lord?  Doesn't the Bible say that there isn't anything new under the sun?  IMHO, the "new song" is a song that is new for you as an individual.  The song has words and meaning that you haven't been able to express before.  The new song comes from a place deeper within than ever before.  At least that has been my experience!

Psalm 96

1 Sing to the Lord a new song;
    sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
    proclaim his salvation day after day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
    he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.
6 Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and glory are in his sanctuary.
7 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering and come into his courts.
9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;
    tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”
    The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;
    he will judge the peoples with equity.
11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
    let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
    let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.
13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes,
    he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
    and the peoples in his faithfulness.

A storms a-comin'

Our Daily Bread
I am not quite to the age yet, but I remember her predicting the weather with the way her body felt.  When Grandma was moving slowly or seemed in pain, we joked "A storms a-comin'!"  I think those days will arrive for me sooner than I want!

The devotional is about not only surviving the storms, but using them to your advantage.  The example was the people of Axum who used the high winds of monsoon season to speed their boats across the sea.  I love that analogy of that vision -- using the conditions of the storm to move forward.

Frankly, I have had so many storms in my life, that I am half way decent at this ,with God's help of course.  My problem is the day-to-day doldrums of every day life.  Being consistent with things in my life like eating right, exercising, and treating people the right way.  I finally figured out that I need to apply the things I learned in the storms to my every day life.  DOH!  Praise God!d

Lord, thank you for the storms in our lives.  Please help us apply what we learn to the sunny times!

Prayers answered Part 1
I wrote about "no big thoughts" last week.  I was in a holding pattern waiting sort of patiently for God to lead me in some areas of my life.  This should not be a surprise, but he did!  I had several answered prayers.  Some things are clearer now.  I am still patiently waiting for some answers for other questions.  Why am I sharing this?

I know I don't have enough faith and trust.  How about you?  We sometimes question God and then sit with our arms crossed like little children pouting until we get an answer.  Well, at least I do that sometimes!  ha!  We lack trust that God will answer.  We lack faith and trust that God knows what is best for us.  He will lead us if we listen.

I messaged a friend this week that the Holy Spirit finally got through to me this week.  My faith was misdirected.  I would pray and then say "OK, God, I told you WHAT I want and WHEN I want it.  Get to it!"  YIkes!  After reviewing some psalms and the end of the Book of Job.  I was embarrassed about that and apologized to God.  I asked for forgiveness once again.

I pray for you that you will get some tidbit of spiritual insight for your life.  Have faith.  Trust in God.  Praise God!a

Home where I belong

Our Daily Bread
Home where I belong is the best known Gospel song of BJ Thomas.  He was a pop singer that found Jesus when I was in college.  I enjoyed his move to contemporary Christian music, though short lived.  Home where I belong described the feelings expressed in devotional.

I know how I am.  I stay too busy to think about my heavenly home. Like the devotional mentioned, I need to loosen my grip on this world!  Being "in the world", but not "of the world" is not easy.  We all want to be successful, happy, respected and live a long life.  It is only human nature in our current society.

I am praying about "longing for Jesus' return".  Looking for his return any day.  Living my life like He is coming back today.  Wow!  What a different approach to life!  Like Paul, we can live and plan our lives responsibly, AND still long for his coming.  Praise God!

Lord, thank you for the promise of your return.  Please help us look and yearn for it!

Foodie Friday
I hosted a pot luck last night.  I filled in our menu with some special bargains from GFS.  Gordons Food Service is a commercial food store that is also open to the public.  I shop there occasionally.  I can usually find some good deals.  Here are three good deals that I warmed up last night.

GFS stuffed cabbage rolls - I know that many folks don't know what a stuffed cabbage roll is or may not like them if they do.  It is the only dish with cooked cabbage that I will eat!  The tray had 10 large stuffed cabbage rolls in a nice tomato sauce.  The filling was very tasty.  The cabbage tasted fresh.  Good deal!

GFS mesquite chicken breasts - These pre-cooked breasts come in a three (maybe four pound) bag.  The breasts are a reasonable size (not too big or too small).  The warm up nicely in the oven or the shelf of a grill ( like I did last night). They had a great taste and were very juicy.

Stouffers cheddar bacon potatoes - This dish was like a hash brown casserole.  The cheese and bacon tasted great.  The potatoes were tender, but not mush.

Check out the GFS specials at your local store.  I have had a great experience with them.

Hey, little lamb

Our Daily Bread
"Hey, little lamb, did you mean to stray?  Or did you slowly wander til you lost your way?" is the beginning of a contemporary Christian song I remember from my college days.  Some close friends and I would sing it to each other if we felt like an intervention was needed!  We all have those times in our lives and are fortunate if we have friends who will intervene.

I love the imagery of the devotional.  It was a mix of the 23rd Psalm and my "shepherd" friends from college for me.  The additional imagery of Jesus being our ultimate shepherd and herding us back on the path that is best for us via the Holy Spirit was very special indeed!

If you read my "no big thoughts" entry last Saturday, I didn't say I was wandering.  It is more like "sitting still, not sure where to move next".  This devotional encourages me as God continues to give me big thoughts and answer prayers.  He answered one this week.  Praise God!  I have faith that more big thoughts are on the way!  Faith abounds.  What mountain are we going to move today?

Lord, thank you for being out good shepherd.  Please help us be willing to follow our watchful leader!

Raspberry Pi update
I wrote about my least expensive geek out purchase a few months ago.  It is the Raspberry Pi computer.  Incredibly small and powerful for it size.  It is a full-functioning computer with HD graphics with an HDMI output, two USB ports (I used a wireless adapter that connects both a mouse and keyboard), a SD card slot (used as the hard drive), and an Ethernet port for networking.  You can also purchase a wireless network USB adapter for the networking.

My nephew and I fired this puppy up (that is geek language for plugged it in) and gave it a try.  It is not a fast computer compared to a desktop or a laptop, but it is speedy considering the size of the unit.  It is the size of a pack of cigarettes!  The graphics were very good.  Browsing the web wasn't bad, though the included web browsers don't support a lot of Internet standards.

I have a buddy that uses this device to power a web cam for one of his pets!  The number of practical uses is very impressive for the size and cost.  Geeking out is rarely this fun and inexpensive!

Eat your lunch

Our Daily Bread
Eating has rarely been an issue for me.  There are some foods that I feel like I can eat my weight in, like shrimp, Hohos and steak!  I always let the coach's taunt of "don't let him eat your lunch!"  NOBODY takes food away from this fat boy!  ha!

After his interaction with the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus told his disciples that "he had food of which they knew not".  How amazing is it that doing the will of the Father was like physical sustenance for Jesus!  Like me, the disciples didn't understand how someone could skip a meal!  ha!  Jesus tried to explain, but they could not understand.  Let us pray for our understanding as we read this passage!

Lord, you showed us what it is like to live the will of the Father.  Please help us to understand and follow!

Wellness Wednesday
Turn 5 Things You Do Every Day Into Meditation Moments by Cindy Griffith-Bennett
These brief mindfulness meditations don't require sitting like a pretzel or sniffing incense, not that there is any thing wrong with a traditional meditation practice if you have the time. But if you are like me, life keeps getting in the way! Here are five opportunities to add meditation without taking time out of your hectic schedule.

1.    When you get up in the morning, you usually wash. Let's use washing your face for our first meditation opportunity. Feel the temperature of the water on your hands. Focus on the temperature as you add a little soap. Notice how the suds feel on your hand. When a thought comes in, think of it as someone else's phone ringing. You hear it, but you don't have to answer it. Next, feel your soapy hands or the washcloth on your face. Focus on that sensation as you wash your face. Next, feel the rinse water on your face -- how does it feel? Is it too cold? Too hot? Just right? If your mind wanders, there is no need to judge, just go back to focusing on the feeling of the water on your face. As you towel off, feel the sensation of the air on your face. It's that simple, you just meditated!

2.    As you go about your day, you are most likely waiting in line or in traffic, so take a moment to breathe. Everyone has to breathe, and there is no way the person in front of you in the coffee line will know you are meditating! Sense the breath coming in and out of your nose or mouth. Don't worry about thoughts; you know what to do, think of your thoughts as someone else's cell phone ringing. Some people like to label their thoughts as "thought" and then let them go. The important thing is returning to sensing your breath coming in and out of your body. You will feel your shoulders relax and your patience returning.

3.    Now it is time to grab some lunch. We all eat, don't we? Another mindfulness meditation can be done while eating. Take a small bite and really taste the food. What is the consistency? What are the different flavors? Can you tell if there is salt or pepper added? Do you like it? Try to eat a few bites without talking. You don't have to spend the whole lunchtime on this, but even 30 seconds or a minute will have interesting results. For even more relaxation and satisfaction, try chewing each bite until it is totally done before you take a drink. You will most likely feel fuller, and psychologically you will feel more satisfied. I love to eat a Peppermint Pattie one tiny bite at a time. The cool mint and chocolate taste even better! I also take a moment to be grateful for the food, the food preparer and, in the case of the Peppermint Pattie, for the chocolate!

4.    It is always healthy to take a walk after you eat. But even if you don't have time then, you will have to walk somewhere today, maybe from the kitchen to the living room or from your car to the house. Take this time to do a quick walking meditation. Feel your feet as they touch the ground and lift up. If you have thoughts, label them or decide to answer them later. You may walk a little funny at first. You probably haven't paid attention to your feet in a while! We all have to walk somewhere, and this meditation can be used for short walks or long ones. It is important to pay attention to where you are going, but besides that, simply focus on the sensation of your feet as they touch and leave the ground. Once you get good at this, you can add focusing on your breath!

5.    Lastly, you will most likely speak to someone during your day. Before you speak, ask yourself, "Are my words kind, useful, necessary and true?" What a wonderful opportunity to empower others with our words! This may not sound like a meditation, yet this technique uses focused attention. You really need to pay attention to your thoughts for this one! You can also give yourself the gift of paying attention to how you speak to yourself. Are your words to yourself also kind, useful, necessary and true? Often we have such negative self-talk. This is a wonderful opportunity to empower yourself!

So you now have five different opportunities to add meditation into your day and start to reap the rewards! Not only can you reduce your stress, increase your mindfulness, strengthen cognitive ability, and energize your body, you can also empower yourself and others without stopping your busy day! It just takes washing, breathing, eating, walking and talking -- all things you do every day anyway.

No! Never alone

Our Daily Bread
My family used to travel in a station wagon.  Yes, the family vehicle of choice before the minivan was invented!  On one trip, we made a hasty bathroom break and filled up the car with gas.  A few minutes after we got back on the road, I looked around and asked "Where's Karen?".  In our rush, we forgot one of my sisters at the gas station!  We rushed back to find my sister sitting patiently for our return.  She knew we would come back for her!

As Christians, we can sometimes react very differently than my sister that day.  When we feel abandoned by God, we go into depression or complain or even curse God.  We see stories of this over and over in the Bible.  The fact that God's Word reveals over and over is this: God is faithful.  He never abandons us.  We are never alone.  NEVER!

As the hymn says (or at least the way we used to sing it): NO! Never a-lone.  NO! Never alone!  (lots of emphasis on the NO!)  ha!

Lord, thank you for always being with us, even when we have moved away from you!

Teaching Tuesday
I completed the first year of EFM (Education for Ministry) last week.  I plan to do some readings this summer, starting in June.  I am taking two weeks off to clear my mind and prepare for the lessons God has for me next.  I have several books that I want to read.  I will list them as I figure out where God leads me.

The first book is "A life of being, having and doing enough" by Wayne Muller.  I think the others will be some CS Lewis classics that I haven't read.

More to come!

Roots

Our Daily Bread
I remember being amazed at trees that grew by the river.  The trees had large, deep roots that were very, very difficult to move or uproot.  It took a long time to make the link to my Christian life!

The devotional does a great job of explaining being "rooted" in God's unchanging grace.  This grace not only gives us confidence in our eternal life with God, but it also gives us the strong roots we need to walk in this life with our Heavenly Father.  Being rooted in his grace means so many things when I think about it.  Knowing out place in the world.  Knowing what we are to do, even when our lives can see murky when we try to look ahead.  As the song says "We shall not be moved"!

Lord, thank you for helping us be strongly rooted in your grace and love!  Please help us show others!

Movie Monday
I got to see two movies this week: Star Trek: Into Darkness and Mud.  Two very different movies!

Star Trek: Into Darkness
I have been anticipating this movie ever since they started showing trailers for it last year!  I like the new crew a lot.  They seem to fit together very well!  The story line was classic -- pulled from one of the best Star Trek movies ever.  That is all I am going to say so I don't spoil it for you!  The special effects were fantastic.  There were very few "what did I just see and why did I just see it" moments.  I really liked it.

I give this movie three bear paws.  See it on the big screen!

Mud
This movie was highly touted by the critics as another "Stand by Me" or coming of age movie.  It is a story of two boys that find a boat tangled above the ground in a tree.  They claim the boat as their own and vow to get it down from the tree.  Their plans seem clear until they discover a man  living in the boat.  The story line gets deeper and darker from there.  The themes intertwine with their own lives.  It is definitely worth watching.  Matthew McConaughey gives the performance of his career as the man living in the boat.

I give this movie two bear paws.  Watch this one on Netflix sometime.

And?

Our Daily Bread
There is a silly Coke Zero commercial where the main character is not satisfied with each encounter.  He always asks "And?" to see what else he can get out of the deal.  That is until he drinks Coke Zero, a product that offers great taste AND zero calories.

I sometimes read the New Testament and ask that same question of God "And?"  I am not asking because I am not satisfied with my encounters with God.  I am asking because I feel like there HAS to be more to the story of the day, the coming of the Holy Spirit, than what happened two thousand years ago!  What should be happening now?  We know all things are possible through God.  What should be happening today?  And?  Let us all pray for a true revival, another coming of the Holy Spirit in our churches and in our lives.

Lord, Thank you so much for the gift of the Holy Spirit.  We know the power it has given us in our lives. We pray for an outpouring of your Spirit in our world today!

Psalm Sunday
Let's look at Psalm 95 today.  It is one of my favorites -- a sing-to-the-Lord praise psalm!  There is also a warning about hardening your hearts at the end!

Psalm 95

1 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and extol him with music and song.
3 For the Lord is the great God,
    the great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth,
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
    and his hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let us bow down in worship,
    let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
7 for he is our God
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    the flock under his care.
Today, if only you would hear his voice,
8 “Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
    as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,
9 where your ancestors tested me;
    they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with that generation;
    I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray,
    and they have not known my ways.’
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
    ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”

Live like that

Our Daily Bread
I have written about the song "Live like that" by Sidewalk Prophets.  It is a great song about living the way we need to live to truly show Christ in our lives.  The devotional today takes this a step further:

Live so that when people get to know you, they will want to get to know Christ.

Wow!  I never thought of it that way before!  I have prayed over and over that folks would see Jesus in my life.  You know, be his representative in this world.  We must take it one step further to live so that others would want to get to know Christ too!  Let us start living that way today!

Lord, I know I am a little slow figuring out things sometimes.  OK, I can be VERY slow figuring things out sometimes.  Please help us live so that others will want to know Christ!

Have you ever had times in your life when you don't feel capable of "big thoughts"?  I am in that place right now.  I am not sure why.  I don't have these times very often, but they are not easy for me when I do.  If you have read my blog or my Facebook posts, I am a "doer".  I do stuff and get stuff done. That is who I am.  So what am I learning so far?

God speaks to me a lot through songs.  I have three going through my mind most of the time during this no big thoughts period.  The first is "Every Good Thing" by The Afters.  I LOVE this song.  It gets me out of whining mode and helps me focus on God's goodness and the wonderful life I live in him.  Wow!

The other song is also by The Afters called "Broken Hallelujah".   I love these lyrics, especially since one of my close friends teases me about being a "freakin' phoenix" for the way I seem to crash and burn with health issues, then rise from the ashes each time stronger and stronger.  I give God all the glory for this.

The last song is Find your Way by the The Afters (can you tell I downloaded something new from iTunes?).  The song is sort of a prodigal son song, sort of a "God is waiting on us" song.  I am not sure what I am supposed to think about this.

So what am I learning from all of this?  Why am I writing about this?  Writing can be cathartic for me, even if no one reads it (I hope that doesn't too selfish).  I write about this stuff because it is normal life stuff.  We all go through it, but can't always put it into words or talk about it with someone.  It is hard to talk with someone about it when you can't put it into words!  It is times like these that we need to talk to God about it, giving him more of our hearts so he can help us express it without words.  God is so amazing that way!

I am also learning to keep "doing" during these periods.  Keep doing the little things that I know that God wants me to do even though I can't see the big picture or understand what I am supposed to do m ore than a  week or two from now.  I am also supposed to resist the negative thoughts that this perpetually positive person gets bombarded with daily.

My prayer is that we can all learn from this shared experience.  Transparency is scary.  It is also freeing especially when sharing helps strengthen the body of Christ.

Big guns

Our Daily Life
After having many physical restrictions for almost four years, I looked forward to going back to the gym and being active again.  It has been a long, slow process of getting back into shape.  I still have a long way to go, but I can do more now than I have in a long time! Like everything else in my life, I joke about my body now.  I teased one friend that I was concerned about flying now.  Pointing to my arms, I said "I don't think they will let me on the plane with these big guns!"  hahaha!

Well, there are arms that are WAY stronger than mine will ever be and they will never tire!  The figurative arms of God are there to catch us and hold us when we need it most.  He is also the source of our strength when we don't think we need him!  Praise God that his "big guns" will hold us up and give us strength to overcome!

Lord, thank you for being who you are, even though my puny brain can't comprehend your majesty and power.  Praise God!

Foodie Friday
I have been craving sugar a lot this week. Not a good thing!  I will post this recipe and promise NOT to make it!  I hope you enjoy it!

No Bake Reese’s Fudge Bars - Kayti
Ingredients
22 individual Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (regular size), unwrapped -16 for the bottom and 6 crumbled on the top

3 cups chocolate chips

1 (14 ounce) can of sweetened condensed milk

Directions

Line a 9x9” pan with foil and spray with cooking spray. Place the peanut butter cups in an even layer on the bottom of the pan. (You should use 16 on the bottom)

Place chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in a medium saucepan over low heat. Stir until chips and milk are melted together.

Once everything is melted together, spread evenly over peanut butter cups in prepared pan. Immediately sprinkle with the crumbled Reese's, pressing them lightly into the fudge. Cool until firm. I like to cool the fudge on the counter until it’s room temperature, then cover with plastic and place in the refrigerator to harden completely. Cut into squares and serve.

My bad

Our Daily Bread
I remember when a phrase that I use a lot first became popular.  The phrase is "My bad!".  I was like "Uh, what the heck does that mean?"  The Urban Dictionary says "my bad" means "A combination of an apology and a dismissal. Basically, saying "oh yeah, I did that, but I don't care". "  Interesting.  Is that what I mean when I say it?

We can be like with sin when we talk to God -- "My bad, God".  We sort of apologize.  We sort of ask for forgiveness.  We sort of dismiss it because we don't want to change our behavior and stop sinning.  We can also say "My bad" when we say or do something to offend a friend.  We sort of apologize.  We sort of ask for forgiveness.  We sort of dismiss it because we don't want to change our behavior and stop it.

What are we saying today after reading this?  Are we saying "My bad" or "I am sorry.  Please forgive me" instead?  I know I will try...

Lord, the second most important thing we are supposed to do is love others.  Please help us love you more so we can love others more.

Google I/O Review

Google Plus
The company redesigned its social network with an impressive set of automated filters and hashtags . Google said it was adding 41 new features and menus that slide in and out, along with a share-box that moves from left to center, and posts (cards) that flip. You can now click Google+ cards to see related ones. The crowd seemed especially impressed by the Knowledge Graph feature that lets people click through automatically discovered related photos. Hangouts will also be a standalone app. On the numbers front -- always a background topic of conversation given the competition with Facebook -- Google+ now has 190 million monthly active users, with about 390 million total users when including people brought in from other Google services like Gmail.

Google Maps
Apple never lets on whether it's worried about a competitor. When it comes to mapping software, it better be. More than a billion people now use Google Maps, which is getting a revamp complete with a new interface, 3D, and social search. (On a related note, more than 1 million Web sites are using Google Maps.) Pins are going away, with map information about the venues themselves being surfaced in their place. Also, a new feature that should warm the cockles of anyone who drives in congested areas: Google Maps will feature live incident reports and crunch the traffic data to reroute users to reach their destinations faster.

Google Play
There are now 48 billion app installations on Google Play, which is getting a new look that Google execs say will help people find apps more easily. The platform is also getting updated with new APIs for game services, that, among other things, will let users invite friends -- or connect with other challengers. The service will let you save games across the cloud so you can finish on one device and then pick up later on another device, thus eliminating any need to start over.

Google Play Music All Access As expected, Google is stepping up its competition with music streaming companies. As our CNET colleague Jessica Dolcourt astutely pointed out, Google is taking on apps that heavily contributed to the success of Android's app store. For $10 a month, All Access will feature music you've chosen as well as titles it thinks you'll like. If you start by June 30, you get it for $8 a month, $2 less than what Pandora charges.

Google Cloud
Messaging Google said approximately 200,000 GSM push messages are being sent per second, or more than 1 billion per day.

Google Chrome
A year ago, Google announced 450 million monthly active users. The new number: 750 million monthly active users -- and counting. Google also talked up the product's rendering capabilities as well as new developer tools meant to result in faster downloads. Pichai also noted that the $249 Samsung Chromebook has been No. 1 on Amazon's laptop section for 180 consecutive days.
Android Activity recognition will help people understand whether someone is driving a car, riding a bike, or walking. The OS will also get updated with cross-platform single sign-ons, which will let people get into several services with their Google log-on info. (Facebook already does this.)

Google Search Voice recognition and natural language understanding are coming to desktops via Chrome.
Google Now Seriously beefed-up personal assistant features for Google Now. Voice search will be available on the desktop via Chrome and the Chrome OS. Also, Google Now gets new cards for public transit commute times and for movies, TV shows, and video games.

Android Studio
A host of developer tools elicited warm applause from the audience as Google detailed a checklist of new features. Again, the idea is to make the process of app development faster and easier (spot a theme here?). Among other features that Google is adding, developers will now be able to edit layouts and compare how they'll appear across different devices and in different languages.

One for all and all for one!

Our Daily Bread
I loved reading the Three Musketeers when I was growing up.  I liked so many things about the characters and the story.  I have seen several movies about the book as an adult.  I am like a little kid when watching one and hearing "All for one and one for all!"

I never really thought about how that saying could apply to the children of God.  We are "all for one" God and we are "all for one" community in Christ (even though we choose to separate ourselves!).  God is the only one for all of us!  We are to connect and serve as part of the body of Christ.  How many times have we heard about the actions of one of our brothers or sisters discouraging someone from coming to church?  We are all affected by our actions!

Lord, thank you for the body of Christ.  Please help us always remember we are all for one body!

Wellness Wednesday
I found this cool article on 8 Ways Happy People Start their Mornings.  I realize that not everyone can do all of these every day.  It is a goal!  Check them out:

1.  A calm awakening.
Awaken yourself peacefully, stretch fully and breathe deeply in them without rushing forward.

2.  Meditate on the goodness.
Begin each day with love, grace, and gratitude.

3.  Let go to begin anew.
Each new morning greets you with no restrictions except for the restrictions you place on it.

4.  Be right where you are.
Live now.  Not before.  Not later.  Just NOW – in the moment you’re in.  Inhabit your morning completely.  Don’t rent it out to the past or the future

5.  Find a little inspiration
Sometimes all you need is a little inspiration in the morning.  Read a motivational quote.  Listen to a song that moves you.  Watch a short video clip that inspires you.

6.  Exercise your love.
Love is the foundation.  Love is the board under the chalk, the ground from which giant trees and buildings arise, and the oxygen in the air.  It’s the place you come back to, no matter where you’ve been or where you’re headed.  Love is where life’s goodness begins.

7.  Follow a relaxing morning routine.
Morning routines are critically important.  They help you focus and build momentum for your day, and they give you the freedom to be present and relaxed – to enjoy just being right where you are each moment, rather than rushing from somewhere to somewhere.  Once you get your routine in order, for the first time in a long time, you will be able to, quite literally, smell the coffee.

8.  Move on to what’s most important.
Today is a golden opportunity to do something that matters to you.

You ain't from 'round here

Our Daily Bread
I have spent a lot of my life in Kentucky.  I went to school there (three times).  I lived in Louisville for 16 years.  I retained much of my Northern Ohio accent all those years.  I don't know how many times I heard the question "You ain't from 'round here, are ya?".  ha!  I spent time with my sister over the weekend who lives in a very rural part of Kentucky.  I just HAD to tease her about it!

The devotional says I was wrong about teasing my sister.  In God's eyes, it is not where you grew up.  It is how you grew up.  I thought that was cool.  I grew up in a small town out in the country.  Attended a small high school.  Even though I had a lot to learn about the big city when I went to college and started traveling, I always felt grounded in my upbringing.  That was probably due to my family as much as my surroundings.

Whenever you might be embarrassed about your upbringing, take a second look at all the good that came out of it!  One of my "good things" is some of the friends from high school that are still part of my life!

Lord, you had a plan in mind when you placed each of us where we grew up.  Please help us to be thankful and look for the good in our upbringing!

Teaching Tuesday
The last lesson of EFM Year One was about the wisdom and apocalyptic books in the Old Testament.  It is hard to believe that Year One is almost over!

Wisdom literature includes Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job.  The book describes Job as one of the "world literature's great classics".  I agree!

Apocalyptic books are generally accepted as Daniel, some of the psalms and part of the Book of Zechariah. Very interesting stuff!  The word "apocalyiptic" comes from a Greek word meaning "to uncover" or "to reveal".  Apocalyptic writing claims to impart a revelation that has been given to the writer.  (EFM Guide)

The manual also made it clear that Revelation in the New Testament should not be classified the same as Daniel!  I thought that was interesting.

We sometimes forget

Our Daily Bread
I was in a big box electronics store with a friend.  We were walking around talking and looking a stuff. If you can believe it, I was teasing him about something and making a fool of myself.  We both realized at the same time that I was on camera.  My silliness was broadcast over thirty TV sets for all to see!   Yikes!

I guess I should say that "I sometimes forget".  You know how it is.  We get so caught in this situation or that situation in our lives and we just forget that God is working.  Just like the electronics store, we don't realize he is watching us.  We don't remember he has our  best interests at mind when he asks us to wait for the answers to our prayers.

Just because God knows everything, it doesn't mean we shouldn't talk to him about it.  I had a heart to heart with God last night driving home from Wooster.  I talked.  I listened.  I don't know the answer just yet.  I will continue to listen and wait and listen.  The talked lifted a burden from my heart that God already knew about.  He also knew that I needed to talk about it and let it go.  Talk to him today!

God, thank you for your gentle reminders of your presence and your workings in our lives!  Praise God!

Movie Monday
I won some free passes to see The Great Gatsby last week.  I would probably call it the "average" Gatsby, however, there were parts of it that were "great"!  First, the overall visual design of the movie was outstanding!  The recreation of 1920s NYC, the opulence of the Gatsby mansion, and the party scenes were amazing!  The narration of the story that was so incredibly written really brought out the quality of the writing.  The acting in general was good, with Leo DiCaprio giving a great performance of Gatsby.  It is probably the best performance I have seen from him.

I give this movie two bear paws.  See it on the big screen if you see it.  Don't be too upset if you don't see it at all.  You can read the book...

Thanks, Mom!

Our Daily Bread
I usually get my mother funny cards for Mothers Day.  They usually have something about how much of a challenge I was growing up ("the brilliant ones are always the hardest") or how I am now ("Sometimes when I open my mouth, my mother comes out!").  All the cards try to express my thanks for her doing her best to rear this silly old bear!

I am not a parent, so I don't understand what it was like for my Mom.  Nor, can I ever imagine what it was like for Mary, the mother of Jesus.  She was truly an amazing lady!  So much faith!  So much willingness to serve God!  She endured so much as a parent when her first born son became the Savior of the world!

On this Mothers Day, tell your Mom how much you love her.  Dwell on fond memories if she has passed.

Lord, thank you for mothers.  Please help us honor them on this day and every other day.

Psalm Sunday
Psalm 94 is one of those "God will strike down the wicked" psalms.  It is a warning.  It is a promise.  As usual, read it out loud!

Psalm 94

1 The Lord is a God who avenges.
    O God who avenges, shine forth.
2 Rise up, Judge of the earth;
    pay back to the proud what they deserve.
3 How long, Lord, will the wicked,
    how long will the wicked be jubilant?
4 They pour out arrogant words;
    all the evildoers are full of boasting.
5 They crush your people, Lord;
    they oppress your inheritance.
6 They slay the widow and the foreigner;
    they murder the fatherless.
7 They say, “The Lord does not see;
    the God of Jacob takes no notice.”
8 Take notice, you senseless ones among the people;
    you fools, when will you become wise?
9 Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
    Does he who formed the eye not see?
10 Does he who disciplines nations not punish?
    Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge?
11 The Lord knows all human plans;
    he knows that they are futile.
12 Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord,
    the one you teach from your law;
13 you grant them relief from days of trouble,
    till a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not reject his people;
    he will never forsake his inheritance.
15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,
    and all the upright in heart will follow it.
16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
    Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?
17 Unless the Lord had given me help,
    I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.
18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,”
    your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.
19 When anxiety was great within me,
    your consolation brought me joy.
20 Can a corrupt throne be allied with you—
    a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?
21 The wicked band together against the righteous
    and condemn the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord has become my fortress,
    and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
23 He will repay them for their sins
    and destroy them for their wickedness;
    the Lord our God will destroy them.

Little reminders

Our Daily Bread
I have a digital photo frame in my dining room.  I haven't updated the photos on it for a few years because I thoroughly enjoy watching the photos from my trip to Hawaii in 2009.  My best friend and I took some great pictures of our big adventure.  What wonderful memories of a lifetime goal of a Hawaii trip!

Like the devotional mentions, I also have things that remind me of the many times that God delivered me.  Many of which are the scars on my chubby body.  A scar from a scary interaction with concertine wire.  A scar for an emergency appendectomy.  A scar for my first cancer surgery.  A huge scar from my second cancer surgery.  I look in the mirror and see the "stones of remembrance" that are carved into my body.

What are the "stones of remembrance" of God's deliverance in your life?  Take a moment today to remember and be truly thankful.  Let those "stones" motivate us to trust and love God even more.

Lord, thank you for delivering us from the challenges of this life.  Please help us build our foundation on the stones of remembrance!

Catch and release
I have funny dreams sometimes.  After hearing some friends at work talk about their fishing adventures the other day, I had a flashback dream of the fishing adventures I had with my dad as a child.  Well, I wouldn't exactly call them adventures.  More like "ordeals" for me.  I have never really liked fishing!  Once fishing concept I learned about is "catch and release". If a fish is too small or not the right kind of fish (since I grew up on Lake Erie), we would enjoy the sport of catching it and then release it back into its watery home.

Once, again, my silly mind made a very loose connection to my Christian life that got stronger and stronger as I thought about it.  Obviously, it is strong enough to write about today!  "Catch and release" is now my new motto.  Here is why.  How many of us "catch" all the worries of the day or week or month or year or lifetime, but never "release" them?  Wow!  I hadn't thought of it that way!

Is the fish (or worry) too small to keep?  Release it.  This means that we are not to keep any worry or care to ourselves regardless of how small it is.  Release it over to God.  Each small worry can grow heavier when we keep collecting them!

Is the fish (or worry) the wrong kind?  Release it.  In my mind, there are worries and there are burdens.  A worry is something that we think is important and personal and maybe even a little selfish.  I find myself worrying about lots of situations that I have no control over.  Well, actually, I do have control over them -- I can release them to God and let him work in his way and timing!

A burden is something that the Holy Spirit lays on your heart.  A special prayer request or a person in trouble or a person facing dire circumstances all all examples of burdens.  Burdens come from God.  We are to catch and release those too.  They are basically unselfish concerns since they come from God.

My challenge for us today and every day is to "catch and release".  Let go, my friends!  God will be there to catch us and hold us in his loving arms!

Go, go, go!

Our Daily Bread
Yes, I realize that my Facebook postings about "Do something" or "Go, go, go" may annoy folks sometimes.  I have been told that the feel bad when they read that because they don't feel like they can measure up to my activity level.  DOH!  This follows along with the devotion today!

So many folks think that the Word of God is something we were given to make us feel bad because we can never be good enough or perfect enough to please God.  They feel bad because they can't measure up to God's standard.  They don't try because they feel like "What's the point?"  I think we all feel that way sometimes!  The point, IMHO, is that we please God when we try as hard as we can to love and serve him. That is what he asks of us -- to give our all.  He does not ask us to be perfect.

I know how I feel when a friend tells me how motivational my posts are.  I imagine that God feels proud and happy with us when we tell him how motivational his Word is and his love is in our lives!  Go, go, go!

Lord, thank you for cheering us on in our walks with you!  Please help us to do our best to love and serve you!

Worry not...

Our Daily Bread
"Don't worry!  Be happy!" the popular calypso song rang out across the yard.  "He makes it sound so easy" I thought to myself.

Well, to be frank, as Christians it should be that easy!  Who knew!  ha!  Well, reading scriptures, praying and meditating will help us focus on letting go!  I used one of my favorite tag lines at the bottom of this entry.  Let go!

I have been working on this a lot the past week.  I have had a weird situation in my life for several years.  I think I am giving it over to God and having faith, but I finally realized my faith was expressed like this: "OK, God I have faith that you will do WHAT I want, WHEN I want.  Let's get to it!"  Major faith fail there!  Turning these things over to God completely enables us to focus on the important things of loving God and loving others.  Let's agree to focus on letting go!

Lord, thank you for allowing us to cast your cares upon you.  Please speak to us and help us let go.

In tune

Our Daily Bread
I grew up in a family that camped a lot.  A LOT....  Most of our family vacations were camping somewhere in Ohio or Kentucky where there are many beautiful state parks.  By the time I was 15 or so, I was very tired of it!  I was tired of being "in tune" with nature as my dad used to say!

I look at my life now and I still don't like camping!  I try to find ways to be "in tune" with God regardless of where I am -- at work, in the car, playing tennis, at church, etc.  God is everywhere.  We can marvel at the wonders of his creation in nature and in human beings!  What an amazing God!

I also find that marveling at God's creations assures me of his working in my life.  Each time I think I have an insurmountable problem, I am gently reminded of all the wonders around me and the wonders God has performed my life.  What an amazing God!

Lord, thank you for working in our lives!  Please help us be aware of your doings and praise you!

Wellness Wednesday
Five reasons to exercise in the morning
I found an interesting article about five reasons we should exercise in the morning.  See if they apply to you.  Here is the article.
  1. It Staves Off Cravings
  2. It Frees Up Your Day
  3. It Helps You Stick To It
  4. It Ups Your Energy
  5. It Jump Starts Your Brain
I should note that even 5 - 10 minutes of calisthenics can give you many of these benefits. It doesn't have to be a full-blown workout!  I find that I am much more disciplined about exercising when I exercise first thing in the morning.  I admit that I get tired some days towards the end of the afternoon or before a busy evening.  This passes.  Give it a try!

Persecuted? Not really

Our Daily Bread
Do you remember your teenage days when every "no" or rejection seemed like persecution?  Our teenage angst was sooooo intense!

I don't think I have ever been persecuted for my faith.  I have been teased a few times or questioned about why I don't do some things like watch porn or subscribe to adult chat sites or watch every reality TV show out there.  Yes, as children of God, we may be teased or even persecuted because we are "in the world", but not "of the world".  The ways of the world and the ways of God are like oil and water that don't mix.  Keeping ourselves grounded in God's Word, but still connected to this world so we can spread God's light is a challenge for all of us!

Lord, than you for making a way we can live our lives like heaven on earth.  Please help us persevere.

Teaching Tuesday
The chapter this week was on the Psalms.  It was a very cool chapter mainly because I love the Psalms!  I enjoy reading them and experiencing the raw emotions of pain, joy, and praise!  I have written about the types of psalms before, so I won't repeat that today.

I recommend finding your favorite psalm, like 23 or 34 or 100, and read it out loud every day this week.

Reeaaadddyyyyy.....

Our Daily Bread
While watching the Winter Olympics one year, some friends and I were fascinated by the starter for the speed skating.  He said the word "Reeeaadddyyyy" exactly the same way before he fired the starting gun.  It was so unique we laughed and laughed about it.  Months later, I was flipping channels and heard that familiar starting word "Reeeaaadddyyyyy".  I couldn't help but laugh!

I mention this story because it came to mind when I read the devotional about preparation.  I like the story because it reminds me to be consistent about readiness.  Most of my friends know that I am a planner, though I have been better about being spontaneous.  I call being spontaneous only having a day or two to play!  ha!  There is nothing wrong with planning your readiness for serving God.  Be flexible when God asks you to be flexible.  Hold firm when God tells you to hold firm!

Lord, thank you for leading us in our preparations to serve you better!

Movie Monday
I got to see Iron Man 3 on Friday.  I really liked it!  It had a great story line, the special effects were very good, but not overwhelming, and it several twists and turns that made it interesting.  My only complaint is that is sort of wrapped up in like two minutes after the final fight scene.  That was a little odd to me.  The acting was appropriate for this type of movie (no Academy Award nominees here..).  See it on the big screen, but wait a week or two for the crowds to die down.  I saw it at the 4:15 show at Arena Grand.  It was't very busy at that time.

I give this three bear paws!  See at the theater!

Hungry for the Word

Our Daily Bread
I am a big guy who loves to eat.  I have to be careful what I eat because I am diabetic.  A family joke is that most of us are diabetic because we are so sweet!  Another joke is "you are what you eat".  I guess I should be one big Hoho!  How I miss those!

If theory of "you are what you eat" is true, then today's devotional makes perfect sense.  I didn't grasp the scripture passage from Jeremiah 15:16 about eating God's Word.  After I thought about it, I love the reference and what it means.  I can see God's Word entering my body like the healthiest foods I have ever eaten, purifying and cleansing my body, mind and heart.  What a vision!

Like many folks, I sometimes use the excuse "The of the Bible I read, the less I understand".  For me, the point of reading and studying the Bible is not to memorize it or know everything there is to know.  The point is to learn about God and let him permeate every part of our being.  What an amazing God we have!

Lord, thank you for your Word.  Please help us learn and listen and "eat" your Word so we can be like you!

Psalm Sunday
We are looking at Psalm 93 this week.  I really like this simple psalm.  I think about the majesty and power of the Niagra Falls and then think about what the psalm says.  What an amazing God we have!

Psalm 93

1 The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty;
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;
    indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
2 Your throne was established long ago;
    you are from all eternity.
3 The seas have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
4 Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers of the sea—
    the Lord on high is mighty.
5 Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
    holiness adorns your house
    for endless days.

From deep within

Our Daily Bread
After a concert in which I sang a solo, a friend came up to me and said "I love it when you sing a solo.  It sounds like it is coming from deep within!".  I didn't really think about it much until the next time I sang.  It was true and I never realized it.  Singing brings up feelings, hopes and dreams from parts of me that I can't always access with my conscious mind!

The devotional talks about the Psalms and how David (and other psalm writers) seem to express their deepest thoughts, fears, hopes, praises and other things that we have trouble expressing.  It is explainable since they are usually sung.  Songs can do that to us.  I am sure you noticed that I reference songs a LOT on this blog!

What song is welling up in your mind and heart?  Pray that song to God. Sing it to God.  Yes, he knows your deepest thoughts and desires.  He wants you to tell him anyway so you can share everything with Him!

Lord, thank you for the gift of music.  Please help us lift songs that can express things that we cannot say.

Simply Saturday
From deep within
God has been teaching me a lot lately.  I don't know if I wasn't paying attention before or that it has been so gradual that these things didn't come to my conscious mind.

First, there was a prayer session where God asked me something very specific.  If I had to make a choice about something, what would my choice be?  From deep within, a sincere and honest reply came out that surprised me.  I shared it with my best friend this morning.

Second, I had a situation come up that scared me a little, but my response was so sincere and loving and natural that I thought about it all day.  God gave me a new goal to be that loving and caring to everyone I meet, not just the folks that are special to me.  I have not always been that way with even the folks I care about very much.  God is teaching me how to treat and cultivate those that need and want me in their lives.  It is a different approach for this bear in a china shop kind of guy!

Lastly, God reminded me about listening.  Take a chill pill, breathe and listen.  He answered some very specific prayers this week in a variety of ways.  I felt special and very humbled by the experiences.  God really does know what is best for us.  It is not always easy to see that or to wait for the perfect time for what he has in store for us.  It is important to remember that our life circumstances cannot affect our joy in the Lord unless we allow them to!

Don't be afraid to sing your song to God.  Don't be afraid to share the hopes, dreams, feelings and fears from deep within.

We too can know this God and be assured of His presence. He has revealed Himself in His creation and in His Word. As we ask Him to make Himself known to us, we’ll learn that He is even more than the owner and creator of everything! - Our Daily Bread web site

On the right course

Our Daily Bread
I talk with different friends and Bible study groups about God's "rules".  We often complain about how restrictive the "don'ts" of the bible are.  After much discussion and prayer, we finally realized that God's Word is like a GPS for the way we are supposed to behave in this life.  Are we on the right course?

Like many men, I don't like to ask for directions.  I don't always listen when someone tries to offer directions and instructions.  I know.  I need to get better at this!  God's Word gives the directions for life that are best for us.  It may not always be obvious that it is the best thing for us at the time.  God will lead us and will be patient with us if we do our best!

What are we "not getting" today?  Are we on the right course?

Lord, thank you for showing us the best way to live.  Please help us follow what is best for us!

Foodie Friday
Our church dinner Saturday is tomorrow.  I will probably buy this pie from Costco instead of making it from scratch.  I tried it last weekend and it was great!  Costco is selling it in Louisville, Cincinnati and Columbus for Derby Weekend.

Bake a Kentucky Derby pie to keep the Kentucky Derby tradition alive. Kentucky Derby pie has been a tradition since the early 1950s when it was first served in a small restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky. Add you own special touch by serving the pie warm, and accenting each piece with a scoop of rich vanilla ice-cream and whipped cream.

The original Kentucky Derby pie recipe is kept a secret. However, improvise by either following this suggested recipe, or change some of the ingredients and make a version of your own! Gather the ingredients, which include flour, brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, butter, Kentucky bourbon, walnuts, chocolate chips, salt, vanilla extract, a pie shell and pie plate.

Kentucky Derby Pie Recipe

Ingredients:
    ½ cup of flour
    ½ cup of brown sugar
    ½ cup of white sugar
    2 eggs, beaten
    ½ cup of melted butter
    2-4   tablespoons Kentucky bourbon
    1 cup of walnuts
    1¼ cups of chocolate chips
    Salt (just a pinch)
    1 tsp of vanilla extract
    1-9   inch deep-dish pie shell

Directions:
Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees F.  Mix flour, sugar, eggs and melted butter. Next combine bourbon, walnuts, vanilla and salt. Line the bottom of the pie crust with chocolate chips. Pour the pie filling in the pie crust. Place the pie in the oven, and let it bake for 35-40 minutes. Allow the pie to cool a bit, but serve it while still warm. Top the pie with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and whipped cream. Most importantly, enjoy!

Some people just need it more

Our Daily Bread
A church I used to attend had the tradition of asking for open prayer requests during the early church service.  Some folks really like it as they share their needs and joys.  Some folks seem to talk every week.  Some folks would rather write down their requests instead of bringing them up in public if they are shy.

The apostle Paul was not afraid to ask for prayer.  He asked for prayer for his ministries over and over, often being very specific in the prayer requests.  He knew the power and need of prayer.  Like Jesus, he believed in prayer!

How about us?  Are we afraid to ask for prayer?  Do we pray for others?  Do we know of folks that specifically need our prayers?  I thought of several!

Lord, thank you for giving us the gift of prayer.  Please help us use it!

Technology Thursday
There isn't much going on with technology right now.  Boring!  There should be some announcements in the next month or two.  I will keep my eye out for new stuff and share.  I might also create some how to or best articles if I can find ones already on the Internet.

It's just stuff

Our Daily Bread
I have had a lot of ups and downs in my life. While I am fortunate now to have my home with lots of cool stuff in it, I remember times when everything I owned fit into my old run down car!  I lived in a rented room, not an apartment, but a room.  I lived pay check to pay check.  I learned something important then -- It's just stuff...

After we learn that lesson, we can move on to the things that are really important: loving God and loving others.  I am not saying that Christians can't be successful and have stuff.  I am saying that those thing should never take higher priority in our lives that loving God and loving others!

We can find our worth, not in what we have, but who we are in the Lord!

Lord, thank you for being our all.  Please help us cherish you more than "stuff".
