Supermarket

My Utmost for His Highest devotional for today [link]

Supermarket
I had a dream last night. This entry is related to the dream and not the MUfHH devotional for today.

I dreamed that church was like a supermarket. Yes, a supermarket. What an interesting metaphor since I like food so much!  So why the comparison?

The supermarket is where we usually go for the things we need to live like our food, drink, and other essentials. In Ohio, the supermarket is where we go before it snows to get milk and toilet paper!  LOL  We have healthy choices or not so healthy choices.

We usually have a grocery list containing all the things we need or want. I thought about the unconscious "grocery list" we bring to church with us as we look for the things we need or want.

I thought about folks who shop at farmers markets and grow food at home. Those folks are sort of like the folks that don't think they need to go to church in my dream.

Supermarkets advertise. God sends the Holy Spirit to call us to worship and serve Him in the church. Down deep, we have a need for that. AND, we have a special on serving the homeless this week!  ;-)

Lastly, unfortunate incidents can happen at the supermarket. Contaminated food. Out of date cans. "Clean up on aisle four!' accidents. Unfortunate incidents can happen at church as well. Like the aisle four cleanup, we forgive and move on.

I am sure there are a lot of things that could be added to this metaphor. That is the way metaphors work.
